Umeå Biotech Incubator appoints new Chairman of the Board

Umeå Biotech Incubator has appointed Lena Karlsson Engman as its new Chairman of the Board. Lena Karlsson Engman, who is a member of the Social Democrats at Umeå City Council and a former researcher at the Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI) says: “I am very proud and happy”.

Lena Karlsson Engman is a trained laboratory assistant and chemist and has worked with research and testing for several years, mainly at the FOI in Umeå. She has been a full-time politician since 2015 as a member of the Social Democrats at the city council, as well as Chairman of the Technical Services Committee and the Rescue Services Committee. Lena Karlsson Engman also heads the board of Biofuel Region and has served as Chairman of Umeå Energi and affiliated companies between 2015 and 2018.

Now she is stepping into her new role as Chairman of the Board of Umeå Biotech Incubator.

“I am both proud and happy to have been elected and also very humble about the task facing me. It will be especially fun to get closer to research-related work again. I believe my own experience of research can come in useful working with the board at UBI”, says Lena Karlsson Engman.

“We are delighted to have recruited Lena. She has the perfect background to be able to understand our researchers' working lives and needs while also having a strong desire to develop and drive projects forward. I am convinced that our cooperation will work perfectly”, says Jennie Ekbeck, CEO of Umeå Biotech Incubator.

Lena Karlsson Engman replaces Åsa Ögren as Chairman of the Board. Åsa Ögren was UBI Chairman for four years and contributed greatly to its success, both nationally and regionally.

“My time at UBI has been both educational and interesting. The board and CEO Jennie Ekbeck have collaborated fantastically to develop UBI's routines, given the business structure and developed UBI into one of Europe's best incubators. UBI's board work is a model example of how different competencies can enrich and interact for the betterment of the business. It is with a sense of pride and gratitude after these four years that I now hand over the Chairman role to Lena”, says Åsa Ögren, a former municipal politician and now a consultant at Esam as well as Chairman of Västerbottens Idrottsförbund.

Umeå Biotech Incubator works with life science companies and helps with financing, business support and access to office and laboratory facilities. UBI is classified as ‘Excellent’ by Vinnova and is ranked as one of Europe's best incubators.
